1. Call your local phone company at least a week before
you move for a new number. Have service turned off at your old address.
2. Call your long distance company to ensure uninterrupted
service for your long distance calling plans and other services.
3. Have gas, electric, and water services connected the
day before you move in. Have service turned off at your old address
the day after you move.
4. Arrange for cable installation at your new address.
Also, have any cable boxes picked up from your old address, to avoid
charges.
5. Fill out a change of address form from the Post Office
to ensure continual mail delivery. This form may also be completed on-line
at www.usps.gov.
6. Make a "Survival Kit" of the most important
things you will need while moving: basic tools (hammer, screwdriver,
knife, tape), payments for movers, bathroom needs (towels, soap, toilet
paper), kitchen needs (snacks, drinks, disposable utensils, cups, and
plates), cleaning needs (sponges, cleansers, broom, dustpan), personal
items (eyeglasses, medication, extra clothing), and the keys and directions
to your new home.
7. Schedule rental trucks and/or moving companies to allow
plenty of time to get to your new home.
8. Make all car rentals, airline, and hotel arrangements
early.
9. Arrange to register your kids in new school(s).
10. Put together your children's current health
records - keep them handy during the move.
11. Update or open new bank accounts to ensure that
funds will be readily available after moving.
